The eighth annual Empowering Women in Business (EWIB) conference took place at the Hilton Oxford Belfry, uniting businesswomen from across the UK, on November 14th.
Over 80 professional women in both franchising and the wider business world attended Empowering Women In Business, ran by the British Franchise Association, focusing on the changing culture of business. Not only were challenges discussed, experiences shared, and learning objectives completed, but attendees connected with speakers and opened up on topics such as mental health and personal vulnerabilities.
The day included an array of speakers, such as former Olympic medallist and twice world champion Sarah Winckless MBE, and Grace Harding, CEO of global seafood restaurant chain Ocean Basket, who set the scene early with her colourful personality.
New to Empowering Women in Business in 2019 was ‘A Question of Culture’, a facilitated discussion with a selection of businesswomen discussing various workplace challenges, and encouraging attendees to share their thoughts on topics, such as opening up EWIB to men.
Naomi Wood, Marketing & PR Manager at Agency Express, who was a first-time EWIB attendee, stated: “It was amazing to see everyone come together, discuss their vulnerabilities and the things they face within the industry.
“It’s made me realise that we are not alone; we can all face these things together and overcome them, and most importantly, how we can treacle these changes to our workplaces.”
Closing the day was former BBC presenter Penny Haslam, who gave a powerful presentation on ‘self-talk’, a negative inner voice that stops women from believing they are an expert in their field.
Pip Wilkins QFP, British Franchise Association CEO, who launched EWIB eight years ago, stated: “Two years ago I opened the event up to people outside of franchising, and although elements of the industry weave through the event, the main purpose is to promote professional excellence in the workplace, wherever that may be.
“Feedback this year has been better than ever and I look forward to this event growing even more.”
