Barber franchise group, Jacks of London has been confirmed as the UK’s top barber after winning the ultimate accolade, Male Grooming Salon of the Year, at the prestigious British Hairdressing Business Awards, hosted by the doyenne of the grooming industry, the 135-year-old Hairdressers Journal.

Official barber to the Aegon Tennis Tournament and personal male grooming specialist to scores of the UK’s top sports people, Jacks of London has built a formidable business reputation over the past 23 years. It’s a major contributor to the booming barbering industry that feeds into the £7 billion UK grooming market. Few newcomers have been able to match the service provided at Jacks, which has over the years grown stronger and stronger through experience and investment.

In the past year alone, Jacks has been shortlisted for 10 major awards, including Best New Men’s Styling Product in the Shortcut Magazine Awards, for its best-selling Salt Spray from its own The True Gent range.

With five stores open and a further two due to open before the end of the year, it has gripped the zeitgeist of the moment, offering potential barber store owners an opportunity to participate in the booming sector with no risk.

Current franchise owners have been celebrating the win all week with their respective teams.

‘Being part of Jacks I’ve experienced, first hand, the amazing journey it is been on as it expands,’ said Southampton franchise owner, Johan Swiegers, who is looking at further opportunities within the brand. ‘The support I received is phenomenal, ensuring the store is constantly busy and this win will help even more. But more importantly, it will help with the recruitment and retention of our barbers, which is probably the biggest challenge facing the hair and barbering industry. Fortunately, it’s not something I struggle with thanks to the backing of the Jacks brand.’

At the BHBAs, hosted by comedian Rob Beckett in central London last Monday (11 Sept), HJ’s executive director, Jayne Lewis-Orr, called Jacks of London’s win ‘truly well-deserved’.

‘Male grooming is enjoying a real boom period, but that means it can be harder than ever to stand out and be noticed,’ said Jayne. ‘For businesses to do well and prove their point of difference, they have to be a cut above – which all of the finalists in this category really are. A truly well-deserved win for Jacks of London, who are consistently expanding, innovating and moving the male grooming industry forward.’

The energy that drives Jacks, which has stores in Wimbledon, Kingston, Guildford, Southampton and Clapham, with two more due to open before Christmas, comes from its focus on brilliant branding to spear head growth and recognition.

Jacks of London founder and MD Sue Whitehead, who was there with some of her team to collect the award, said: ‘This is an amazing win for our team, who work so hard to be the best they can and our franchise owners who so invested in the brand. Our partners are our priority and that constantly drives us all to innovate, to lead in trends and technique, to mix the traditional with the new and deliver it all in a truly man-friendly space.’
