CarMoney – Growing a National Brand Through Franchising
CarMoney has grown rapidly since launching in 2016, becoming one of the UK’s most recognisable names in automotive finance.
With demand increasing across the country and dealerships wanting strong local relationships, the business reached a point where franchising became the next logical step. The model needed to be scalable, compliant, and genuinely transferable – and that’s when the team turned to Ashtons Franchise Consulting for support.
Franchise consultant Charlie Dickson, who led the project, shared this reflection on the partnership:
“It’s been a real privilege to work alongside CarMoney as their franchise consultant to bring the franchise vision to market.
The unique CarMoney business model – along with their strong USPs, brand values, operational resources and experienced team – were pivotal in creating a comprehensive, scalable franchise system that supports the business’s continued growth and ambitious expansion strategy. I am confident that the CarMoney franchise will deliver long-term value for both CarMoney as franchisor and their franchise partners.”
The interview below with Wendy Taylor, CarMoney’s Franchise Director, explores how the business was founded, why franchising became their chosen growth strategy, and what they learned while building a national franchise network.

When was the business founded?
CarMoney was founded in August 2016 in Glasgow. From day one, the focus was on doing things differently in the car finance space, using technology to give customers a fairer, more transparent way to access finance, while also supporting dealers with a better, more efficient process.
How did the business start, and how did it evolve in the early years?
We started as a digital-first brokerage, helping customers compare finance options and access a wide panel of lenders through a simple online journey. Early on, we recognised a real opportunity to support both sides of the market. Not just customers, but also dealerships that were under pressure to manage finance efficiently while delivering a strong customer experience.
Over time, we built out a platform that works for both. Customers get access to competitive, unbiased offers, and dealers benefit from a streamlined process that removes much of the administrative burden. That combination has been key to our growth.

Alastair Grier, CEO of CarMoney
What led you to consider franchising as a growth strategy?
As the business grew, it became clear that there was strong demand across the UK, but also that this is a relationship-driven industry. Dealers want to work with people they know and trust locally.
Franchising gave us a way to scale the business while keeping that local presence. We can combine the strength of the CarMoney brand, our lender panel and our technology, with experienced operators on the ground who understand their market. It allows us to grow in a way that is both fast and sustainable.
How did you first come across Ashtons Franchise, and why did you choose to work with us?
When we made the decision to franchise, we knew we needed the right partner to help us structure it properly. We came across Ashtons during that process and were impressed by their experience and practical approach.
They understood very quickly what we were trying to achieve and helped us shape a franchise model that reflects the strength of our business while being attractive and workable for franchisees. It was important for us to work with people who had done this before and could guide us through the process properly.
Were there any challenges along the way, and how were they overcome?
The biggest challenge is always taking a successful internal model and making it fully transferable. You need to be able to replicate it consistently, while maintaining quality and compliance, particularly in a regulated sector like finance.
We overcame that by investing heavily in our systems, processes, and support structure. We have a strong platform, a clear way of working, and ongoing support for our franchise partners. That gives them the tools they need to succeed from day one.
How many franchisees have you recruited to date?
We’ve built a strong and growing network of 11 franchises across key regions of the UK, including multiple territories in the South of England and now London. The network is continuing to expand as we bring in the right people to represent the brand in new areas.

Do you have any new franchisees in the pipeline?
Yes, we do. There is ongoing interest in the model, and we are actively progressing opportunities in a number of regions. Our focus is always on finding the right partners rather than growing too quickly, so we’re careful about how we build the network.
How has franchising impacted the overall growth of your brand?
Franchising has been a major driver of our growth. It has allowed us to expand our geographic reach quickly, while strengthening our presence in local markets.
It also brings a different level of energy into the business. Our franchise partners are invested in building their own success, and that translates into strong relationships with dealers and a high level of service. It has helped accelerate brand awareness and supported our wider growth ambitions.
What qualities do you look for in a successful franchisee?
We look for people with strong experience in the motor trade or financial services, particularly those who understand dealer relationships. Just as important is attitude. We want people who are driven, professional and committed to delivering a great customer experience.
The best franchisees are those who can build trust quickly, understand the needs of their market and are prepared to put the work in to grow their territory.
How do you see the brand evolving over the next 5–10 years?
We have ambitious growth plans. Our aim is to continue expanding our national footprint through franchising, while strengthening our technology and lender relationships.
Over the next five to ten years, we see CarMoney becoming a leading name in automotive finance across the UK, known for both its digital capability and its local presence through our franchise network.
What is your best piece of advice for businesses considering franchising?
Make sure your business is truly ready. You need a model that is proven, repeatable and supported by strong systems and processes. Franchising can accelerate growth, but only if the foundations are right.
The other key point is to be selective. The success of your network depends on the quality of your franchisees. Take the time to find the right people who share your values and are committed to building the business properly.
