Should Franchisors Go Above and Beyond With Franchisee Support?

  • Posted

It’s the heartbeat of any strong franchise network – but how far should a franchisor go with franchisee support?

In Part 5 of our Great Franchising Debate series, Rebecca and Rob share their perspectives on what it really means to deliver exceptional support. Should “going above and beyond” be the gold standard, or is it a slippery slope?

Going Beyond the Basics: Rebecca’s Perspective

“I firmly believe that being a great franchisor isn’t just about providing the basics. It’s about consistently going above and beyond with your support, and the most successful franchise networks are built on a foundation of genuine partnership. That partnership really thrives when franchisees feel that they’re truly backed by their franchisor at all times. A franchisee doesn’t just invest their money when they buy into a franchise – they invest trust in the brand, the systems, and the people behind it. Those first conversations are vital, but you don’t want them to just buy in at the beginning. You want the franchisor to be their biggest cheerleader throughout the whole franchise journey. I really feel the franchisor has to step up at every opportunity, not just at the start.”

For Rebecca, being proactive, reliable, and fully engaged sets the tone for long-term trust and success.

The Risk of Over-Support: Rob’s Perspective

Rob agrees that strong support is crucial, but he warns against exceeding expectations too often:

“I don’t disagree with you, Rebecca, but if you’re not careful, if you go beyond the expected level of support too often, it can create unrealistic expectations or blur boundaries. Franchisees buy a system – they don’t necessarily buy a superhero.”

“The goal is to empower franchisees to succeed through the business model they invested in, rather than relying on the franchisor to step in all the time. If the system is robust and the processes are strong, franchises can thrive without extra favours. My worry is that if a franchisor goes above and beyond for one franchisee, then it can raise expectations for others and suddenly support feels inconsistent across the network.”

Rob highlights the delicate balance franchisors must strike – supporting franchisees effectively without creating dependency.

Finding the Right Balance

Rebecca acknowledges the challenge:

“It’s tricky, Rob, isn’t it? We’ve all heard horror stories where the franchisor awards the franchise and then disappears. You have to find the balance – giving 110% every time isn’t sustainable. But you still need to be there for your franchisees when it really matters.”

Rob agrees, emphasising that consistency often matters more than heroics:

“Being a good franchisor isn’t necessarily about going above and beyond. It’s about doing what you said you would – but doing it well every time.

The best franchisees rely on the system and their own processes, knowing the franchisor is there to support them when needed.”

The Verdict: Support That Works

This debate captures a reality that every franchisor grapples with:

  • Franchisees need to feel supported, championed, and backed by a real partnership.
  • But they also need to rely on the system, not the franchisor, as a safety net.

The sweet spot lies somewhere in between. Exceptional franchisors don’t promise the world – they deliver what they said they would, with quality, clarity, and reliability. And when they do go above and beyond, they do so thoughtfully, in a way that supports the whole network, rather than setting unsustainable precedents.

Great franchising isn’t just about heroics. It’s about balance, empowerment, and building a franchise model so strong that support becomes a foundation, not a crutch.
